Colored Stone Services

In addition to identification reports, the GIA Laboratory also provides the following colored stone services:

Quality Assurance Services | Fees for Service
Clients may submit parcels or an individual item for quality assurance identification purposes. The following quality assurance services are available. Results are recorded on a spreadsheet and detail only the specific information requested.

  • QA Report Sorting: Includes the sorting of a parcel by specific attributes (such as treated versus non-treated).
  • QA Report Batch Testing (QAB): Includes random testing of parcels and separating those with specific attributes (such as natural from synthetic amethyst).
  • QA Report Prelim Testing (QAP): Includes preliminary testing of a single stone where only verbal indication of certain attributes is required (such as heat treatment, residue level, or enhancement level).
  • QA Report Beryllium Testing (QABE): Testing of a single stone (corundum) for beryllium treatment.

Re-Identification | Fees for Service
Items already identified by GIA may be resubmitted for a re-identification due to the item being altered, due to a disagreement, or to update an older report to current standards or format. In all cases the item goes back through the identification process and a new report is issued.

Damage Assessment | Fees for Service
This service includes a gemological identification of a polished gemstone along with a determination of any damage it may have incurred since it was last polished. The findings are documented on a GIA Identification Report format.

Report Verification Service | Fees for Service
To confirm the authenticity of your GIA Report, or the information it contains, you can request the verification service. Simply submit your item along with its original report to the GIA Laboratory. The results of the verification will be returned to you, along with your item and its original report.

On-Site Consultancy Services | Fees for Service
Visits are prearranged visits by GIA gemologists to business offices or to homes of individuals who require gemological advice. This advice will be gemological in nature but may or may not involve the examination of actual stones. All advice is given in the form of written reports available within one week of the visit.
